Presentation to Montpelier City Council on Smokefree Downtown

New Directions will be on the Agenda for the Montpelier City Council meeting on Wednesday, June 27th to talk about Tobacco!

The Statehouse Lawn and the Montpelier Parks are now smoke free and our next task is to educate the public about the health benefits of smoke free areas in the downtown.

We have surveyed pedestrians and store owners and 1,517 people have signed a petition recommending that the Montpelier City Council designate the downtown shopping area* as a smoke free zone. The plan will include recommendations for places where smokers can smoke without affecting the health of others.

There are many health problems with second hand smoke around families, kids, the elderly, pets, and those suffering from asthma and lung problems.

There is also a problem with butt litter even though we have installed 15 Sidewalk Buttler cigarette receptacles downtown. These get emptied weekly and Trash Tramp volunteers clean up over 2,000 butts every Tuesday!

Can you join us at the City Council meeting on June 27th? Your presence will show support for a smoke free zone in the *downtown shopping area? (Meeting starts at 6:30 pm.) If you can’t be there in person, you can still be heard: contact City Council members and/or Mayor Anne Watson (http://www.montpelier-vt.org/258/City-Council-Mayor), or write a letter to the editor.

*Main Street from Barre Street to the Kellogg Hubbard Library, State Street from Main Street to the Capital Plaza Hotel, Elm Street to Court Street, Langdon Street, and Park Avenue (where the Union Elementary School is).
